Have you ever wondered what the difference between a Class I and a Class V trailer hitch really was? If so, then you have come to the right place. We at Trick Trucks want to educate you, the consumer, to help you make the right purchase.
So what are the differences between each trailer hitch class? Let’s find out…
Class I Hitch: A Class 1 trailer hitch can handle a gross trailer weight (GTW) of up to 2,000 lbs., and a maximum tongue weight of 200 lbs. This type of hitch is often used on small cars, pickups, or vans for light-duty towing.
Class II Hitch: A Class 2 trailer hitch can handle a GTW of up to 3,500 lbs. and a maximum tongue weight of 300 lbs. This type of hitch is often used on full-size vans, full-size pickups, and SUVs for towing small boat trailers, snowmobile trailers, motorcycle trailers or campers.
Class III Hitch: A Class 3 trailer hitch can handle a GTW of up to 5,000 lbs. and a maximum tongue weight of 500 lbs. The standard type of this hitch is considered for general towing.
Class IV Hitch: A Class 4 trailer hitch can handle a GTW of up to 10,000 lbs. and a maximum tongue weight of 2,000 lbs. This type of hitch is usually a weight-distributing hitch.
Class V Hitch: A Class 5 trailer hitch can handle a GTW over 10,000 lbs. and a maximum tongue weight over 1,200 lbs. This type of hitch is usually a weight-distributing hitch, used for extra heavy loads like a car trailer, horse trailer or a large boat or camper.
5th Wheel and Gooseneck Hitches: If it is too large for a Class V hitch, these might be your best option. They mount in the bed of your pickup truck.
Hopefully this will help you determine what class of trailer hitch you need for your truck. And remember to always choose a hitch that is strong enough to handle the maximum anticipated total weight of the trailer but does not exceed the towing capacity of your vehicle.

Everyone is familiar with the design of a tractor trailer (also known as a semi-truck, big rig, 18 wheeler, or diesel truck). These colossal trucks are capable of easily hauling enormous loads. If only there was a way to harness that type of power for your standard pickup…
There is.
A regular ball hitch would simply snap under the weight. The solution: a fifth wheel trailer hitch. Fifth wheel hitches are designed for carrying much heavier loads than your standard ball hitch. How can they do this?
The 5th wheel hitch is in the bed of the truck, and not flimsily attached to your bumper. The front end of the trailer actually extends over the rear bumper and attaches in your truck bed. Therefore the weight of the trailer is pressing down between the cab and the rear axel, allowing the truck to carry a significantly greater amount of weight.
The fifth wheel hitch is a large, flat plate that has a shape similar to a horseshoe. The metal rails that run beneath the hitch attach to the frame of the pickup truck for strength. The trailer connects to the fifth wheel hitch via a downward-facing pin — called a king pin — along with a plate that rests on top of the fifth wheel hitch plate. The king pin locks into position so it is secure within the hitch but can pivot to accommodate turns.
A fifth wheel truck hitch will run you between $500 and $3,000.
