What Do You Know About Your Tires?
Wheels need tires, and whether you drive a sedan or souped-up truck meant for off-roading, you’re going to need some sturdy tires.

Wheels are one of the most important inventions in human history. Without the wheel, wagons, carts, and chariots would never have been possible. Or, for that matter, horse-drawn buggies. But wheels need tires, and whether you drive a sedan or souped-up truck meant for off-roading, you’re going to need some sturdy tires. But how much do you know about them?

The Modern Tire

You may not think of 1847 as exactly modern. But that was the year in which the modern tire first became possible. Robert Thompson brought these tires to life through his patents. Sadly, this type of tire It wasn’t a huge hit. It wasn’t until 1888 that John Boyd Dunlop made a crucial breakthrough. Dunlop added air to the tires of his son’s bicycle to make it easier to ride. This was the world’s first pneumatic tire.

The Dunlop tire was a huge step forward in terms of tire technology. But there was still a long way to go before we see the tires we find on today’s motorcycles, stock cars, and pickup trucks. Rubber, steel, and fabric are some of the vital components that are used in the manufacture of today’s tires. New materials are used in the process, along with experimental attempts to redesign the tires to last longer and resist damage better.

Tire Treads

Without a doubt, the tires you see out on the road today or at your dealership wouldn’t be the same without tire treads. The treads help improve tire traction and enhance overall vehicle handling. The treads also help your car or truck cope with unpredictable weather – snow in the winter or baking asphalt in the summer, for example. Whether you’re hauling your RV or boat behind you, your truck wouldn’t be able to pull all that cargo without an expertly-engineered tire.

Today’s Tires

Factories all over the world help design and build today’s tires. You can’t go far without the right tire, and even if you need a tire rotation, a spare tire, or an alignment done, none of it would be possible without the humble car tire.
